The Federal government has reinforced its partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to enhance food production and strengthen resilience amid global supply challenges.

Finance Minister Wale Edun and Agriculture Minister Senator Abubakar Kyari recently met with senior JICA officials to discuss progress on the Food Security Emergency Loan Support Programme, funded by a JPY 15 billion (about $110 million) facility.

With the rainy season underway, the ministers emphasized the need for rapid, coordinated efforts to maximize benefits for farmers and rural communities across the country.

It was agreed that core agricultural production activities will continue immediately under the existing framework, while other elements such as aggregation and financing will be reviewed in line with the original loan agreement.

JICA welcomed Nigeria’s commitment to implementing the programme and requested formal clarifications on proposed adjustments to ensure smooth execution.

The collaboration underlines both governments’ dedication to addressing food security challenges, improving livelihoods, and driving economic growth in Nigeria.
