The federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to renewable energy as a driver of industrial growth and socio-economic development in Nigeria.
Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, expressed this reaffirmation during the signing of a green hydrogen deal between the Chinese firm, Loongi Green Energy Technology, and APPL Hydrogen Limited in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Nnaji described the project as a major milestone in Nigeria’s transition toward sustainable energy, aligning with global trends in clean energy adoption.
He highlighted the importance of investments in green hydrogen, green methanol, and green ammonia production, positioning Nigeria as a leader in green energy innovation.
The minister further outlined the benefits of integrating science and technology into the renewable energy sector, including industrial growth, job creation, foreign investment attraction, and strengthening Nigeria’s global energy market presence.
He stressed that the APPL Hydrogen Limited project aligns with national priorities, particularly in fostering a robust research and development ecosystem to support sustainable energy solutions.
Nnaji assured that the federal government would work in collaboration with the Akwa Ibom State government to facilitate investment and technological advancements needed to drive the project’s success.
However, he emphasized that public and private sector synergy is crucial for achieving the desired outcomes.
Bamanga Usman Jada, Managing Director of the Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone Authority, expressed optimism about the project’s potential to diversify Nigeria’s economy, boost exports, and address foreign exchange challenges.
He highlighted additional benefits such as technology transfer, large-scale job creation, and environmental sustainability.
Idara Ekpo, Chief Vision Officer of APPL Hydrogen Limited, provided further insights into the project, explaining that the company is entering the green hydrogen sector due to the increasing global shift towards cleaner energy sources to combat climate change.
He revealed that APPL Hydrogen Limited would produce 1.2 million metric tons of green hydrogen derivatives annually, primarily green methanol for export.
The production process will also yield medical oxygen and food-grade carbon dioxide, adding value to the renewable energy initiative.
The company is collaborating with eleven international partners to execute the project successfully.
