As the world rallies to combat climate change and its detrimental impact on the environment and economy, the Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation in FCT Abuja has taken a significant step by inaugurating climate change committees and establishing a climate change unit.
The aim is to develop action plans that will effectively address and mitigate the issue of flooding in the FCT.
The inauguration ceremony was held on Monday in Abuja.
During the opening declaration of the climate change unit at the Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Olobashola Kolawole, the Director of DST&I, highlighted the department’s mandate to reach grassroots communities and educate people who may not be well-informed about climate change.
The emphasis is on using local dialects to facilitate effective communication and awareness.
Dr. Kolawole emphasized the need for partnerships and comprehensive coverage of all climate change-related activities by the FCT Science, Technology, and Innovation department to raise public awareness about the impact of climate change and the innovative solutions being developed.
Mrs. Nwachukwu N. Angela, Director of Technology Acquisition and Promotion, DST&I, commended the establishment of the climate change unit and expressed hope that the committee would work diligently to implement action plans to mitigate climate change in the FCT.
She stressed the importance of advocacy, especially in addressing issues like deforestation that contribute to climate change.
Consultant Mrs. Shakirat A Oriyomi, CEO of Flyingdove Consult Nig LTD, highlighted the significance of carbon pricing and the role of the established climate change unit in promoting sustainability.
She emphasized the need to collaborate with various stakeholders, including project developers, to create a positive impact on the environment.
Dr. Obateru Olubukola Catherine, the desk officer of the Climate Change Unit, commended the director for initiating the unit and the committee, emphasizing its potential for environmental conservation.
She explained how the unit would facilitate verification, audits, registry, and certification services for carbon credits, encouraging industry participation in climate resilience and linking climate-smart entrepreneurs to global carbon credit markets.
