Fact-Check: Has the Earth Temperature dropped since 2020?

A post on Facebook   and Instagram has become popular among users. According to the post, despite the availability of new data from 2020 that refutes the presence of climate change, experts are still utilizing out-of-date climate change data from 2010. The speaker went on to say that scientists are manipulating the existence of climate change by using outdated data. As to the report, the latest data indicates a minor decrease in Earth’s temperature since 2020 and a reversal of Greenland’s ice melting. Since then, the post has received 11 comments, 1.9k reposts, and 2.4k likes. Chrixbix is the host of the page handle on X (formerly Twitter), which has been replicated on Facebook.

Claim: Since 2020, the Earth’s temperature has decreased

Findings:Comprehensive web searches are conducted by NatureFact on the National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA) and the World Meteorological Organization. According to  search on NASA study, the average worldwide surface temperature in 2020 statistically tied with 2016 as the hottest year ever recorded, indicating that human activity has continued to cause a long-term warming trend.

According to WMO  report, since January 2020, the earth’s temperature has increased by almost 10 mm, setting a new record this year. Ten percent of the total rise in sea level since satellite observations began some thirty years ago has occurred in the last two and a half years alone.

The glaciers in the European Alps have shown signs of unprecedented melting as of 2022, with a particularly severe impact. For the first time since September, there was rain in Greenland instead of snow, marking the 26th year in a row that the ice sheet has shrunk in bulk.

Around 1.15 [1.02 to 1.28] °C will be added to the pre-industrial average of 1850–1900 for the global mean temperature in 2022, according to current estimates. 2022 is probably only going to be the fifth or sixth warmest year due to an uncommon triple-dip cooling La Niña. That being said, the long-term trend remains unchanged, and another warmer year on record will eventually come.

The average yearly global temperature has risen by 0.08°C (0.14°F) every decade since 1880, and more than twice that pace (+0.18°C / +0.32°F) since 1981,  according to the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). In 2020, the land and ocean surface temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere above the average by 1.28°C (+2.30°F), setting a new record over the previous 141 years.
