Expert task govt on waste generation, management

By George George ldowu

A leading waste management expert, Dr Abiola Bashorun, has called on governments at all levels to take decisive action in addressing the pressing waste management challenges in Nigeria.

Bashorun made this known at weekend in Akure, Ondo State capital.

Speaking with news reporter, she emphasized the critical need for community engagement, policy reforms, and effective waste management practices to combat the country’s environmental waste issues.

Bashorun highlighted the root causes of escalating waste production, attributing it to rapid population growth, urban infrastructure development, and modern activities in urban centres that disrupt natural water systems.

She pointed out that cities like Dubai and Lagos, emblematic of rapid urban development, often create infrastructures that hinder natural water absorption, exacerbating drainage problems.

She equally emphasized the urgency of sustainable urban planning and waste management strategies, especially in the face of changing climatic conditions.

Bashorun stressed the importance of community involvement, policy implementation, and comprehensive pollutant mitigation strategies to effectively manage urban water systems.

Bashorun’s call to action underscores the necessity for immediate and concerted efforts by government authorities and stakeholders to implement sustainable waste management practices across Nigeria.
