Environmental violators can expect jail time. – LAWMA

By Yemi Olakitan

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) was able to get three people sentenced to two months in jail for various environmental crimes. A fourth person who used a cart pusher is still waiting for his or her verdict.

This comes on the heels of the agency’s collaboration with the police to put an end to the never-ending attacks on LAWMA’s personnel. This collaboration ensured the prompt arrest of cart pushers and those who patronised them.

This was revealed to the media at Ijora-Olopa by Mr. Ibrahim Odumboni, who is the Managing Director and CEO of LAWMA.

He said that the agreement with the police was meant to keep up a new offensive against all kinds of environmental violations and unwarranted attacks on the agency’s staff. The disclosure was made by Mr. Ibrahim Odumboni.

According to him, “Last week, we got jail terms for three environmental offenders, and we have a pending sentence for another person who patronized a cart pusher, making it an offence for anyone to patronize a cart pusher.”

He went on to say that “last week, we got jail terms for three environmental offenders.”

” Up until this point, we had warned unrepentant environmental violators about our renewed offensive and urged them to steer clear of engaging in harmful practices. However, there are some people who will never evolve. We were able to get jail sentences of at least two months for three of these people. The fourth person’s case is still being heard. I am also happy about LAWMA’s collaboration with the Nigeria Police to end needless attacks on our personnel while they are on day or night duty. This partnership is also meant to stop people from pushing shopping carts. Anyone found pushing a shopping cart anywhere in Lagos will be arrested and prosecuted right away, and people who use them won’t be spared, he stressed.
