Enugu State Fire Service is to commence a campaign on safety measures against possible fire outbreaks in the state as from Dec. 1, 2020, a statement from the Enugu State Chief Fire Officer, Mr Okwudiri Ohaa, said in Enugu on Saturday.
Ohaa said that the campaign would focus on indiscriminate bush burning with special attention being paid to Ogbete Main Market, Timber Shed and 42 other markets across the state.
He added that the campaign would also involve road walks on major streets in towns, churches, and communities across the three Senatorial Zones of the state.
The fire chief disclosed that the fire safety enlightenment campaign was aimed at re-awakening safety consciousness and the need for people to take precautions, especially now that the dry season had set in.
”Uphold safety tips to prevent fire outbreak during this dry season in order to safeguard lives and property. Very importantly, rampant fire outbreaks constitute one of the calamities common at this period of the year.
“This is as a result of the harmattan, which is associated with dryness and wind. Harmattan haze with extremely dry and dusty winds blows and makes it easy for fire to spread at the slightest ignition,” Ohaa said.
He disclosed that the agency would also use other available ways in spreading the message of fire safety, prevention and precaution, while urging those travelling out of the town during this period to always switch off all electrical appliances in their homes before setting out.
Similarly, he urged residents of the state to endeavor to make use of only qualified technicians and engineers in electrical installations in their buildings.
