In a two-day program themed “Clean Cookstoves for Sustainable Energy Development for Women,” the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) is taking proactive steps to address energy challenges through a gender-sensitive lens.

Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director-General of ECN, highlighted this initiative during the inauguration of a gender sensitization training session on clean cooking solutions held in Abuja.

He emphasized that the training aims not only to enhance the socio-economic well-being of women and their families but also to combat the adverse effects of traditional cooking methods on air quality.

Through interactive sessions, discussions, and practical demonstrations, the program seeks to facilitate the transition towards cleaner and more sustainable cooking practices.

Abdullahi reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to integrating gender considerations into energy policies and initiatives, recognizing women’s unique perspectives and capacities in shaping effective solutions.

Dr. Charles Odii, representing the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), emphasized the pivotal role of innovation and technology in driving progress across various sectors.

He assured continued collaboration between SMEDAN and ECN to bolster the nation’s Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector.

Alhaji Abdulkareem Aliyu, a resource person, underscored the critical role of women in responding to climate change, particularly within the energy sector.

He emphasized the imperative of mainstreaming gender equality in Nigeria’s climate action to foster renewable development and enhance community resilience.

Mrs. Ngozi Uche, speaking on behalf of participating women, expressed gratitude to the commission for the opportunity.

She highlighted the importance of the program in sensitizing others to adopt clean cookstoves, recognizing its potential to revolutionize cooking practices and promote environmental sustainability.

Through such initiatives, the ECN endeavors to empower women, safeguard the environment, and drive sustainable development for future generations, aligning with broader efforts to address pressing challenges and foster inclusive growth.
