Electricity: FG to deploy 5 million solar power connectors to power communities

The Federal Government has disclosed its collaboration with investors to implement a solar power initiative called the Solar Power Niger programme, aimed at delivering five million solar power connections to communities that currently lack access to the national electricity grid.

This initiative is being facilitated by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), an implementing agency operating under the Federal Ministry of Power.

The REA will initially focus on electrifying communities that have been historically underserved or completely unserved, with the goal of stimulating economic growth through increased access to electricity.

The initiative will be carried out in three phases, with the first phase aimed at delivering 250,000 connections to households and businesses. The programme will create jobs in the solar energy sector and help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The solar power Niger program, which is part of the economic sustainability plan, seeks to achieve the deployment of five million new solar connections in off-grid communities.

Recently, an investors` matchmaking event took place in Abuja, where potential investors had the opportunity to present their financial proposals to developers.

The primary objective of the program is to expand energy access to 25 million individuals by providing them with solar home systems or connecting them to a mini-grid network.
