Recommendations made by the OANDO Foundation, which was established in 2020 in partnership with Sumitomo Chemical Japan, has indicated that proper education and sensitisation can assist in addressing Nigeria’s environmental waste and pollution issues.
The organization reported that it has improved recycling, sanitation, and environmental education in seven schools spread over three towns through its “Clean Our World Project”, which increased to 24 schools in 10 villages in the third phase.
According to the Head of OANDO Foundation, Adekanla Adegoke, the foundation worked with Green Hub Africa and the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board to create lesson materials and a curriculum on climate action for schools.
She stressed that the curriculum focuses on sustainable practices including waste management and green jobs in order to prepare State Education Managers, educators, and students for a future affected by climate change.
Speaking about the relevance of the COW project, Hakeem Lamidi, the Board Secretary of the Lagos Suburban Environmental Board, emphasized the role that environmental sustainability education plays in shaping responsible citizens.
A syllabus intended to standardize environmental education in Lagos State was unveiled by the program manager, Tonia Uduimoh. The program, which started with 7 schools and has since grown to 24 schools, aims to raise children’s understanding of environmental issues and promote eco-friendly conduct that will help protect the environment.
Mrs. Sherifat Adedoyin, the Permanent Board Member of Lagos SUBEB who oversees Co-Curricular Activities, expressed gratitude to the OANDO Foundation and its partners for identifying the students at an early age and pledged to assist the implementation of the syllabus in all public schools in the state.
