Earth Treasures: Eclogite Rock

Eclogite is a metamorphic rock whose formation occurs under high pressures and temperatures deep within the Earth’s crust.

It originates from basaltic or gabbroic rocks that undergo extensive metamorphism. It was first recognized and described in the mid-19th century.

Eclogite is an uncommon metamorphic rock which is found in regions where tectonic forces have caused the subduction of oceanic crust beneath continental crust.

It is commonly associated with high-pressure metamorphic terranes or inclusions within other rocks. It is rare in comparison to other rocks.

Eclogite can be used in the production of Jewelry mostly the variety with vivid green garnets called Tsavorite. They are valued and used in making rings, pendants etc.

Eclogite is composed primarily of two main minerals – garnet and omphacite. Garnet typically is responsible for green color in ECLOGITE, while omphacite is a pyroxene mineral that appears as dark green to black crystals. It has a fine-grained texture due to the high pressures and temperatures it forms under during metamorphism.

Eclogite is generally a hard rock and has a hardness of around 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale with a relative density ranging from 3.2 to 3.5 grams per cubic centimeter.

Eclogite has significant value both economically and scientifically. Its tsavorite garnets are highly sought after in the gemstone industry, commanding high prices due to their rarity and beauty.

Additionally, the scientific study of eclogite provides insights into the processes occurring deep within the Earth’s crust and helps researchers understand the geological history and dynamics of mountain-building events.
