Earth Treasures: Angelite

By Chisom Ibemere

Angelite is a new mineral which was discovered in Peru in 1987 and was known as “angel stone” due to its light blue color and its association with angelic energies. It is categorized as a blue gemstone.

The meaning of the name Angelite translates to being without water. This is because it belongs to a group of stones that have no water or hydration inside them.

Angelite is a form of the mineral gypsum, a soft sulfate mineral. It is typically found in sedimentary deposits, often in association with other minerals like calcite and halite. Some notable sources of angelite include Peru, Germany, Poland, Libya, Egypt, and Mexico.

Angelite is basically used as a decorative stone and is popular in the production of ornamental carvings, beads, and cabochons.

Due to its softness, it is not recommended for use in jewelry that will be subjected to daily wear and tear. Angelite is also used in crystal healing and metaphysical practices, believed to have calming and soothing properties that can help with anxiety, stress, and communication with spiritual realms.

Angelite is a variety of gypsum. It has a Mohs hardness of 3 to 3.5, which means it is relatively soft and can be easily scratched. The mineral has a pale blue to light blue color, reminiscent of celestial blue skies.

It often exhibits a white or grayish mottled appearance due to impurities and veining. Angelite has a vitreous to pearly luster and can exhibit a translucency or transparency, depending on the specific piece. It is quite light in weight compared to many other gemstones and minerals.

The value of angelite is influenced by factors such as size, quality, color, and craftsmanship. Unlike precious gemstones, angelite is relatively affordable and accessible. Prices for angelite products can vary depending on the size and intricacy of the carving, as well as the reputation of the artist or seller.

As with all gemstones and minerals, the value can vary depending on supply and demand, fashion trends, and the preferences of individual buyers.
