Dr. Agnes Yemisi Asagbra, Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), issued a stern warning to superstore operators in Abuja, urging them to strictly follow biosafety rules concerning genetically modified (GM) products that have not been approved by the NBMA.

During a meeting held on November 24, 2023, with superstore operators in Abuja, Dr. Asagbra emphasized the agency’s readiness to impose sanctions on any superstore found in violation of the NBMA regulations.

She highlighted that specific sanctions have been established for individuals or organizations contravening the provisions of the NBMA Act 2015, as amended.

Dr. Asagbra underscored the importance of responsible biosafety practices when handling GM products, emphasizing that biosafety is not merely a regulatory hurdle but a commitment to the well-being of citizens and the environment.

In addressing the superstore operators, Dr. Asagbra emphasized the significance of compliance with biosafety regulations, stating that it is non-negotiable.

She stressed the need for collaborative efforts to ensure the integrity and safety of genetically modified products in the market.

Reiterating the mandates outlined in the NBMA Act 2015, Dr. Asagbra emphasized that no person, institution, or body should engage in activities involving GM products without the approval or permit of the Agency.

She made it clear that ignorance of the law is not an excuse, and the NBMA has the authority to inspect, monitor, and enforce its mandates.

Acknowledging the potential benefits of GM products in addressing global challenges such as food security and crop resilience, Dr. Asagbra highlighted the need for transparency in the supply chain.

She urged superstore operators to maintain open communication with suppliers and consumers, ensuring accurate information about the origin, composition, and safety assessments of GM products.

In response, the superstore operators pledged to continue abiding by regulations governing the importation of GM products.

They expressed their commitment to collaborating with the NBMA to ensure that only approved GM products are stocked, promoting the well-being and trust of Nigerian consumers.
