Authorities of the Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas, NLNG, has called for calm over reported dead fishes on Bonny river in Rivers State.
Residents of Bonny, had earlier last week, raised alarm of dead fishes on the shore of the river.
The residents, who expressed concern, called for investigation as to ascertain the cause of the mass death of fishes in the river.
Reacting to the development, NLNG said the company remained committed to a safe and responsible operations in line with global best practices.
NLNG General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, Mr Andy Odeh, said the company has launched an investigations to unravel the cause of the dead fishes.
Odeh said: “Our attention has been drawn to reports of dead fish along a canal between our Bonny facility and a nearby facility. NLNG is deeply concerned about these reports, and investigations into the cause and water content have since commenced.
“NLNG is also communicating with neighbouring facility owners and other stakeholders to ascertain the likely cause of the incident. NLNG calls for calm as investigations are ongoing, and the outcomes are being awaited for proper evaluation.
“The safety and well-being of its host community and the environment is a top priority for NLNG. It remains committed to operating safely as a responsible corporate citizen and in accordance with global environmental safety standards.”
