Scottish middle-distance star Laura Muir has announced that she is now being coached by former Olympic medallist Steve Cram and her ex-competitor Laura Weightman.
The 31-year-old Olympic silver medallist had previously worked with Steve Vernon, UK Athletics’ former endurance programme manager, in preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympics. This followed her 2023 split from long-time coach Andy Young, who had guided her to major successes, including a 1500m silver medal in Tokyo, a world bronze, and multiple European and Commonwealth titles.
Steve Cram, a legendary 1500m runner who won Olympic silver in Los Angeles in 1984, brings decades of expertise to the role. His coaching partner, Laura Weightman, a European and Commonwealth medallist, adds valuable insight as someone who trained and competed alongside Muir.
In an Instagram post, Muir expressed her excitement about the new coaching team, calling them “truly inspiring people” and acknowledging their impact on her career.
“Steve has commentated on practically every major race of my career, coached Laura W, and ran pretty well himself over 1500m,” Muir wrote. “Laura [Weightman] is an amazing competitor and dear friend who I raced and trained alongside for many years.”
She also thanked her previous coach, Steve Vernon, for his support over the past two years, wishing him well in his future endeavors.
Muir’s announcement signals a fresh chapter in her career as she aims to build on her successes and contend for further honors on the global stage.
Both coaches bring a wealth of experience to the table, and fans will watch eagerly to see how this new partnership helps shape Muir’s performances leading up to her next major competitions.
