The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has sensitised its members of staff on energy laws governing the commission’s mandate to ensure effective service delivery.
Its Director-General, Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, said this on Wednesday at a two-day awareness workshop organised for management staff of the commission by Jedidah Global Synergy Nigeria Ltd., in Abuja.
Abdullahi said it was imperative for the management to know the pivotal role the commission played in shaping energy landscape of Nigeria.
He said that having a comprehensive grasp of these laws would ensure effective compliance and alignment with the national energy objectives.
“This workshop serves as a platform to enhance awareness and understanding of the laws governing ECN’s mandate.
“It is imperative for stakeholders, policymakers, industry players, and the general public to have a comprehensive grasp of the laws to ensure effective compliance and alignment with our national energy objectives.
“With the ever-increasing demand for energy coupled with the urgent need to transition towards sustainable and efficient energy sources, the responsibility entrusted upon us becomes even more significant.
“As the statutory agency mandated to plan and coordinate activities in the energy sector, particularly in renewable energy and energy efficiency, ECN stands at the forefront of driving Nigeria’s energy transition agenda,’’ he said.
The director-general said the workshop would delve into intricacies of ECN laws to explore its provisions, implications and applications in the context of renewable and energy efficiency initiatives.
He called on members of staff to actively engage in the proceedings, share experiences and contribute ideas that would enrich their collective understanding and chart a course towards more sustainable energy future for Nigeria.
“Throughout this workshop, we will delve into the intricacies of ECN laws, exploring their provisions, implications, and application in the context of renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives.
“Through interactive sessions, discussions and presentations, we aim to foster a collaborative environment where knowledge is shared, insights are gained, and partnerships are forged to propel our energy transition journey forward,” he said.
In her remarks, Mrs Chinelo Eze, Civil Litigation Department, Ministry of Justice, said that ECN laws served as the cornerstone to promote renewable energy sources and energy efficiency practices.
Eze said that the Civil Litigation Department recognised the importance of raising awareness about the ECN laws among stakeholders, including government agencies, private sector entities and civil society organisations.
“Effective dissemination of information regarding the legal provisions, regulatory requirements and enforcements mechanisms is essential to ensure compliance and accountability in the energy sector.
“Through this workshop, we aim to facilitate a deeper understanding of ECN laws, implications and their relevance in the context of renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives,” she said.
Eze said that the ministry would explore legal frameworks governing renewable energy projects, licensing procedures, regulatory compliance, disputes resolution mechanisms and avenues for legal recourse in cases of non-compliance or breaches.
