An environment advocacy body, Climate Africa Media Initiative Center (CAMIC) has called for sustainable practices to combat the escalating challenge of water scarcity in drought-affected regions across Africa. This is coming as the body suggested ways that governments across Africa can tackle the challenge of drought.
According to CAMIC, as climate change continues to exacerbate drought conditions, millions of people in rural and urban areas are grappling with severe water shortages that threaten both their livelihoods and access to essential services.
“CAMIC calls on policymakers at the local, national, and continental levels to strengthen and enforce regulations that promote sustainable water management practices. Policies aimed at incentivizing water conservation, protecting freshwater ecosystems, and supporting climate adaptation efforts must be prioritized,” said the body in a statement by its Chief Growth Officer, Pius Alabi at the weekend.
The body reiterated commitment in advocating for the adoption of innovative and sustainable water management strategies designed to safeguard water resources, enhance community resilience, and ensure long-term water security.
It said, rainwater harvesting, drip irrigation, resalination and water recycling, watershed management, public awareness and education, rought-resistant crops, are some of the ways to tackle drought problems in Africa.
“At CAMIC, we believe that addressing water scarcity is not just a technical challenge, but a critical issue of environmental justice and human dignity. Our mission is to ensure that all people, particularly those in drought-prone areas, have access to clean and reliable water sources. Through partnerships, research, and community-driven initiatives, CAMIC is committed to building sustainable solutions that enhance water security across Africa,” the body stated.
