Clean Energy Transition in Africa: Tinubu seeks UK Bilateral Collaboration

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for a stronger economic partnership with the United Kingdom takes center stage as he emphasizes the urgent need for clean energy transition in Africa.

In a high-profile meeting with UK Foreign Secretary, Rt Hon. James Cleverly MP, on Wednesday in Abuja, President Tinubu passionately called for increased investments across sectors to achieve sustainable and inclusive prosperity for the continent.

With a focus on piping Nigerian gas to Europe as an alternative clean energy source, the President urged the UK to play a pivotal role in financing and facilitating the much-needed transformation.

The meeting marks a critical juncture in forging a dynamic partnership for security, economic growth, and most importantly, a greener future for Africa.

During the meeting, President Tinubu emphasized the historical symbiotic connection and economic ties between Africa and the UK, urging the UK government to invest more across sectors to support the continent’s development.

Addressing the pressing issue of energy transition, President Tinubu stressed the importance of mobilizing investments to pipe gas from Nigeria to Europe, as gas is considered an acceptable alternative clean energy source.

He highlighted the challenges posed by unstable governments in the sub-region and urged the UK government to support Nigeria in securing the region against terrorist activities.

In response, Rt Hon. Cleverly congratulated President Tinubu on his election victory and commended his bold economic reforms, including fuel subsidy removal and the establishment of multiple foreign exchange markets.
