A tiny car, from Chinese automaker Wuling, has overtaken Tesla as the top-selling electric vehicle in China, and it costs just $5,000.

The car was manufactured as a joint venture between local carmakers, Wuling, and General Motors, targeting young consumers and less affluent drivers.

Acceding to a user, it is China’s cheapest and most popular electric car and it is highly affordable.

“It is highly affordable and the whole county is being encouraged to go electric. It is affordable so I decided to buy it,” a user says.

The electric car is a city car with a top speed of 100km/hr. and has a range of 120-170km. Unlike most electric cars, it can be charged with a normal 220V outlet.

Zhang Yiqin, who works with SAIC-GM-Wuling marketing, said, “there is a huge untapped market in China. We are redefining the concept of new-energy cars. They are no longer just expensive and luxurious.”
