CAMIC urges urgent action on extreme heat in Nigeria

The Climate Africa Media Initiative Centre (CAMIC) has urged the government and other stakeholders to take urgent actions on the extreme heat being experienced in Nigeria this year.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the media centre called attention to a recent report of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) which indicates that Nigeria faces a significant increase in temperature.

The report disclosed that the heat wave surpasses historical records and poses severe risks to public health, agriculture, and the environment.

The meteorological body also highlighted the urgent need for coordinated action to mitigate the impacts of extreme heat wave and address the underlying factors contributing to climate change.

CAMIC echoes the WMO’s call for immediate measures to safeguard communities and ecosystems from the adverse effects of rising temperatures.

As a media think-tank on climate change policy and advocacy in Africa, CAMIC emphasizes the importance of public engagement, education, and enlightenment in driving meaningful action towards climate resilience and environmental sustainability.

In light of the WMO’s findings, CAMIC urges governments, businesses, civil society
organizations, and individuals to prioritize climate adaptation and mitigation efforts, promote renewable energy sources, and
implement policies that support climate-resilient development pathways.
