CAMIC calls for urgent action to tackle coastal flooding in Africa

Environmental advocacy body, Climate Africa Media Initiative Center (CAMIC) is calling for urgent action to address coastal flooding in Africa.

The body said the call became imperative as local communities begin to experience river flooding as a result of rising water levels in rivers, lakes, and coastal areas because of torrential rains.

CAMIC also expressed deep concern over the escalating impact of climate change on water bodies across Africa.

It said rising water levels in rivers, lakes, and coastal areas pose significant threats to communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems and called for immediate and coordinated actions to mitigate the effects.

CAMIC in a statement by its Chief Growth Officer, Pius Alabi, made available to NatureNews in Abuja on Tuesday, noted that through investments in advanced technologies for real-time monitoring of water levels and weather patterns and strengthen early warning systems to provide timely alerts for communities at risk, flooding could be minimized.

It also stated that reinforcing and elevating critical infrastructure such as dams, levees, and drainage systems and promoting the construction of flood-resistant buildings and the retrofitting of existing structures, is also key to tackling flooding across the continent.

Other solutions proffered by the advocacy body included; implementing large-scale reforestation and afforestation projects to stabilize soil and reduce runoff, engaging local communities in developing and implementing adaptation plans, integrating climate risk assessments into urban and rural planning processes, enforcing zoning regulations to prevent construction in high-risk floodplains, strengthen partnerships with international organizations, governments, and the private sector to mobilize financial and technical support and advocating for increased funding for climate adaptation projects in vulnerable regions.

“Conclusively, the rising water levels present a clear and present danger to millions across Africa. By taking proactive measures now, we can reduce the risks and protect our communities, economies, and natural environments,” CAMIC said.

The body further pledged its commitment to leading and supporting efforts, but quickly added, “we cannot do it alone. We call on governments, businesses, and individuals to join us in this critical endeavor.”

Climate Africa Media Initiative Centre (CAMIC) is a non-governmental organization dedicated to advancing environmental sustainability and combating climate change.

Through research, advocacy, and collaborative initiatives, CAMIC seeks to contribute to a more sustainable and resilient planet for current and future generations.
