Dr. Betta Edu on Sunday, February 8, 2026, hosted former New York City Mayor Eric Adams at her residence in Abuja, calling for stronger collaboration between Nigeria and the United States across security, health, humanitarian, and economic sectors.

Adams, who served as New York City’s 111th mayor from 2022 to 2025, is on his first international trip since leaving office.

The meeting addressed Nigeria’s security challenges, gaps in humanitarian support, and the impact of reduced foreign aid. Health issues, particularly out-of-pocket healthcare costs and the push for Universal Health Coverage, were also discussed.

Edu highlighted Nigeria’s stabilizing economy and urged Adams to leverage his global network to attract investment and development support.

She further called for U.S. engagement beyond security, including health, education, and humanitarian initiatives, and encouraged the Nigerian diaspora in New York to promote the country positively and contribute to development back home.

“I am honored to receive him, and Nigeria stands to benefit from this strategic visit,” Edu said.

Adams praised Nigerians for their contributions to New York City and urged them to stay connected to their roots.

He pledged to use his influence to attract investment, grants, and funding to Nigeria while mobilizing the diaspora to support national development, reduce poverty, and improve healthcare and education.

As a gesture of Nigerian hospitality, Edu presented Adams with locally made souvenirs, including Adire fabrics.
