The Bauchi State Government has urged youths in Gamawa Local Government Area to embrace dry-season irrigation farming as a strategy to counteract the devastating effects of last year’s floods.
Ahmad Gololo, Chairman of Gamawa LGA, made the appeal during a media tour on Sunday, highlighting the destruction of farmlands and the looming threat of food insecurity caused by the 2023 floods.
Gololo noted that the council has supported youths by providing grain seedlings and security to protect farms from herders during the dry season.
He revealed that these efforts have significantly boosted local revenue, with the council generating an estimated ₦5 billion from irrigation farming activities.
Emphasizing a collaborative approach, Gololo said the community and council have prioritized irrigation farming as a sustainable solution to seasonal flooding challenges.
The Bauchi State Government’s initiatives aim to increase dry-season food production, stabilize local economies, and reduce reliance on rain-fed agriculture, while also creating job opportunities for youths in flood-prone areas.
