With the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) predicting potential flooding in eight local government areas in Bauchi State, the government has sprung into action to address the looming threat by establishing a steering committee on flood to strategize and implement preventive measures in the identified areas.
The Director-General of Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA), Dr. Ibrahim Kabir, revealed this development during a media briefing in Bauchi. The areas at risk include Bauchi, Alkaleri, Kirfi, Gamawa, Itas Gadau, Giade, Jama’are, and Zaki LGAs.
The newly formed committee consists of representatives from BASEPA, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and the Ministry of Works, Housing, and Environment.
Collaboratively, they will formulate comprehensive plans aimed at mitigating the potential impact of the upcoming floods.
Underlining their dedication to the safety and well-being of the public, the state government has launched an extensive awareness campaign through radio and television.
The primary objective of these programs is to educate and enlighten residents, particularly those residing in high-risk areas, about essential safety measures and precautions to be taken during the impending rainy season.
Recognizing the possibility of displacements resulting from the floods, the government has taken proactive steps to address this concern.
In preparation for such scenarios, a dedicated camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs) has been set up to provide temporary shelter and support for those who may be affected.
As the rainy season approaches, the Bauchi State government remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting its citizens from the potential hazards of flooding.
By implementing these proactive measures, the government aims to minimize the impact of heavy rains and ensure the welfare of its residents.
