Ayuso Wins Tirreno-Adriatico with Pidcock Sixth

Spain’s Juan Ayuso clinched victory in the Tirreno-Adriatico on Sunday, with Great Britain’s Tom Pidcock finishing sixth in the general classification.

UAE Team Emirates rider Ayuso, 22, had assumed the overall lead of the race by winning stage six from Pidcock on Saturday.

Ayuso ended up 35 seconds clear of second-placed Filippo Ganna of Ineos Grenadiers in the final standings after stage seven, with Antonio Tiberi of Bahrain Victorious one second further behind in third.

Sunday’s 147km final stage from Porto Potenza Picena to San Benedetto del Tronto was won by Italy’s Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek), who just got the better of Irish rider Sam Bennett in a closely contested sprint finish.

Elsewhere, Matteo Jorgenson retained his Paris-Nice title after finishing second behind fellow American Magnus Sheffield in Sunday’s final stage.

Visma-Lease A Bike rider Jorgenson triumphed by one minute 15 seconds in the general classification, with Germany’s Florian Lipowitz coming second and Thymen Arensman of the Netherlands third, 43 seconds further back.

At the Trofeo Alfredo Binda, home favourite Elisa Balsamo emerged from a sprint finish to take her third win in the event.

The Italian, riding for Lidl-Trek, came home in four hours and 19 minutes to edge out Hungary’s Blanka Vas and 18-year-old Briton Cat Ferguson, who finished third with Movistar – her first podium in her first women’s world tour race.

Marianne Vos finished fourth in a highly competitive field, which also featured British Olympic medallist Lizzie Deignan, a team-mate of Balsamo’s at Lidl-Trek.
