APM Terminals Leads Nigeria’s Maritime Sector with Eco-Friendly Approach

APM Terminals Apapa, Nigeria’s foremost container terminal, has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability by implementing fuel-efficient cargo handling equipment that minimizes CO2 emissions.

In a recent press conference held in Lagos, Mr. Steen Knudsen, the Terminal Manager of APM Terminals Apapa, emphasized dedication to reducing the terminal’s ecological footprint.

Knudsen highlighted the terminal’s proactive approach to equipment acquisition, favoring electrified options and low CO2 emission fuel types.

“Our equipment procurement strategy revolves around prioritizing fuel efficiency and exploring alternative options,” stated Knudsen.

He emphasized the necessity of collaboration between public and private entities to bolster clean electricity generation and distribution, essential for impactful industrial emission reduction.

Echoing A.P. Moller-Maersk’s global objective of achieving net-zero CO2 emissions across all operations, Knudsen conveyed APM Terminals Apapa’s alignment with this ambition.

“Our vision at APM Terminals Apapa resonates with A.P. Moller-Maersk’s worldwide goal of net-zero CO2 emissions,” he affirmed.

Knudsen underscored the company’s efforts to raise awareness about the environmental implications of port activities and detailed concrete steps taken to mitigate negative effects.

Minimizing pollution and promoting the responsible management of plastic products through reduction, reuse, and recycling initiatives are central to their approach. The terminal’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its innovative conversion of used tires and plastics into practical products like pavers for walkways.

Employee education is a cornerstone of APM Terminals Apapa’s green strategy, fostering a culture of environmentally conscious practices.

Knudsen emphasized the importance of nurturing a greener legacy for future generations by teaching employees to manage potentially harmful materials sustainably.

Commending the Federal Government’s construction of a new standard gauge rail line at the port, Knudsen emphasized its alignment with APM Terminals Apapa’s eco-friendly supply chain vision.

The addition of this rail line is expected to enhance cargo delivery efficiency and provide a cost-effective and energy-efficient mode of transportation, alleviating road congestion around Apapa.

Located within the Lagos Port Complex Apapa, APM Terminals Apapa stands as Nigeria’s largest container terminal. With an impressive investment of over $438 million in equipment and facilities over the past 17 years, the terminal consistently introduces innovative practices aimed at optimizing supply chain efficiency for both shipping lines and landside customers.
