From trimming flowers in his uncle’s yard to designing landscapes for clients across state lines, one Ankpa resident, James Aina, is proving that passion and perseverance can cultivate success, even in challenging environments.
Aina grew up near Divine Suite in Olubojo, Ankpa Local Government Area, Kogi State where his early fascination with flowers blossomed into a career. He began by tending to potted plants, a simple act that ignited a lifelong love for horticulture.
His journey took a professional turn when he secured a gardening position at AA Suite along Enokpoli Road.
This experience provided him with the foundation he needed to launch his own business, Hydra Garden, now located at Area 1 in Ankpa.
Hydra Garden specializes in landscaping, transforming ordinary spaces into verdant retreats.
Despite his talent and dedication, Aina faces significant hurdles.
He notes that a lack of local awareness regarding the value of landscaping presents a major challenge.
Many residents, he explains, are not yet accustomed to investing in green spaces, making it difficult to secure consistent local clients. “It’s a process of education,” Aina says.
“We need to show people the benefits of having well-designed landscapes, not just aesthetically, but also for the environment and well-being.”
Undeterred by these challenges, Hydra Garden has already garnered recognition beyond Ankpa.
Aina offers advice to aspiring landscapers: “Be prepared for challenges, especially in developing areas.
Understand the local market, educate potential clients, and develop strong business skills alongside your horticultural expertise. Patience and perseverance are key.”
His story is a testament to the power of passion and the potential for growth, even in the face of adversity.
Hydra Garden’s success, despite local challenges, serves as an inspiration to other entrepreneurs in Ankpa and highlights the growing potential of the landscaping industry in the region.
As James Aina continues to cultivate beauty and transform spaces, he hopes to see a growing appreciation for the value of landscaping within his own community.
