Analyst Advocates CNG as Safer, Affordable Substitute for Petrol

Mr. Brian Amonu, the Managing Director of Gas Analytics and Solutions, has spoken on the benefits of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) over Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) and petrol during an interview with journalists.

He highlighted CNG’s safety advantages, emphasizing that it dissipates quickly in case of leaks, making it safer than petrol. Amonu also pointed out the absence of explosive incidents in Edo, where CNG has been used since 2007.

Despite the positive aspects of CNG, Amonu noted the slow adoption rate in Edo state due to a lack of proper planning for development.

He believes the current period, marked by the removal of fuel subsidies, presents an opportune time for CNG operation, given the rise in transportation costs and challenges in electricity access.

Gas Analytics and Solutions, backed by the African Development Bank, collaborates with NNPC Gas and Power Investment Company to deliver 300 Mega Watts of electricity to each state’s distribution franchises.

The partnership aims to support investment opportunities in various sectors such as agriculture, solid minerals, and power-reliant manufacturing.

Additionally, they plan to construct 10-20 CNG stations in every state in collaboration with the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN).

To promote investment in the CNG vehicles sector, Amonu’s company partners with the labor congress to offer pre-qualification loan forms to workers in Nigeria.

They are working with eight local banks, with support from AfDB, to provide loans for vehicle owners, mass transit operators, and state governments for converting their vehicles to CNG.

The loans will be repayable over 3-5 years, aiming to create a significant fleet of converted CNG vehicles to drive investment in the CNG value chain.
