Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has taken a significant step to enhance maritime security by procuring 14 gunboats for the state’s security forces.

The inauguration ceremony of these patrol gunboats took place at the Nigerian Naval Ship base in Ikot Abasi local government area, officiated by Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, the Chief of Naval Staff.

Governor Eno, reiterating his commitment to maritime security in Akwa Ibom, emphasized the importance of safeguarding water routes and protecting crucial economic resources. The acquisition of these 14 gunboats aligns with his administration’s ARISE Agenda.

This strategic move aims to curtail the activities of pirates and criminal groups operating in coastal communities, fostering a safer maritime environment.

Governor Eno expressed optimism that this initiative would not only bolster the maritime economy but also improve water transportation within the country and with neighboring states, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for residents in coastal communities.

Acknowledging the collaborative efforts between the Nigerian Navy, other security forces, and the state government, Governor Eno outlined that the waterways operation would be a joint endeavor led by the Nigerian Navy.

Assistance from other agencies and knowledgeable locals identified through the Ibom Community Watch program will also contribute to the success of these operations.

Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla commended Governor Umo Eno’s vision in exploring the blue economy to boost Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria’s overall economy.

He lauded the government’s commitment to ensuring a secure maritime environment for business by procuring the 14 patrol boats.

He assured that the Navy is dedicated to providing optimal security for the state, issuing a warning to criminals that their activities will no longer go unchecked.

General Koko Essien, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Waterways, highlighted the extensive Akwa Ibom coastline, spanning over 129 kilometers with numerous adjoining rivers, as a haven for criminals.

The launch of 14 patrol boats signifies a substantial setback for these criminals, as the government is determined to dislodge them and ensure they face the consequences of their actions.

Community leaders, including Hon. Uduak Odudoh and Hon. Selina Ukpatu, expressed gratitude for the government’s intervention, anticipating relief for coastal communities plagued by the activities of waterways criminals. They pledged unwavering support for Governor Umo Eno and his administration.

The acquisition of these gunboats stands as a robust initiative to fortify maritime security, protect vital resources, and foster economic development in Akwa Ibom State.
