Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called for stronger collaboration among government, researchers, financial institutions, investors and farmers to tackle food insecurity and transform Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

Speaking at the National Legislative Summit and Expo on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions held at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Akpabio said modern agriculture must be driven by technology, innovation, mechanisation and climate-smart practices rather than outdated farming methods.

Represented by Deputy Senate Majority Leader Isa Ashiru, he stressed that agriculture should become attractive and profitable for young people through the use of artificial intelligence, drones, digital irrigation and greenhouse technology.

Akpabio said the National Assembly remained committed to supporting policies that promote food security, rural development, youth employment and agro-industrialisation, adding that Nigeria must move from raw production to agro-processing and global competitiveness.

Director-General of IITA, Simeon Ehui, said partnerships and reforms in the sector would help Nigeria achieve sustainable food security and create more opportunities for youths.
