Again, fire razes Jos wood market

As the dry season has set in, incidents of fire have started occurring.
The Timber B Hausa line of the wood market popularly known as Katako In Jos, the Plateau State Capital was gutted by fire on Monday night.


The inferno destroyed many shops and property worth millions of naira.
An eyewitness, Adamu Abdulahi said the fire started at about 11:00pm burning dozens of timber shelves even as firefighters tried to quench it.
“The fire started and men of the fire service, did their best as they swiftly responded, and they kept on coming with their firefighting trucks,” he said.

In 2013, a similar incident occurred in the same market, and traders lost goods worth millions of naira.
The Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong promised to set up a committee to look into the constant cause(s) of the fire in Katako.
The governor who visited the scene on Monday night, expressed concern over the sad development regretting that it is affecting traders and the economy of the state.
The governor represented by the Management Committee Chairman of Jos North, Shehu Bala Usman said the committee when constituted would work closely with the officials of the market to find a lasting solution to the problem.
