The African Development Bank (AfDB) has formed alliance with the President of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva alongside 82 other countries to eradicate hunger and poverty globally during the just concluded G20 Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
This was reveled in a statement made available to NatureNews by senior advisor to the president of AfDB, Dr. Victor Oladokun
Recall that in recent time, Akinwumi Adesina, the president of AfDB had consistently expressed his commitment in ensuring hunger and poverty are eradicated around the world particularly in Africa.
According to the statement, the initiative is aimed at lifting half a billion people out of hunger within six years, addressing what President Lula describes as “a preventable scourge that shames humanity.”
President Adesina, a long-time advocate for sustainable development, also led calls at the G20 Summit to channel International Monetary Fund Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) through Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs).
He said the innovative financing model, co-developed by the AfDB and the Inter-American Development Bank, can leverage resources up to seven times, providing billions in development funding for Africa at no additional cost to G20 taxpayers.
Meanwhile, the G20 also endorsed a range of global initiatives, including measures to address conflicts in Gaza, Lebanon, and Ukraine, and debated a tax on ultra-high-net-worth individuals to address global inequality.
As discussions continue, the AfDB remains a driving force in championing financial, agricultural and social solutions for Africa and beyond.
