The President of the All-Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Ibrahim Kabir, has forecasted a prosperous year for Nigeria, citing expectations of increased food production and reduced prices, thanks to the strengthening of the naira.
He disclosed this to newsmen on Monday, where he expressed optimism about higher productivity and affordability of food products throughout 2024.
He highlighted the positive impact of the firming naira on reducing production costs, particularly for imported herbicides and insecticides.
Kabir emphasized the importance of a strong naira for improving the nation’s food security context, emphasizing that food availability, affordability, and nutritional balance are essential goals.
Regarding efforts to combat inflation, Kabir acknowledged the initiatives of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and assured the public of ongoing government measures to stabilize prices.
Discussing Nigeria’s progress towards food security, Kabir praised the current administration’s efforts, particularly emphasizing strategic partnerships prioritized by the Tinubu-led government.
He mentioned initiatives such as the African Development Bank-supported program focusing on key crops like wheat, rice, cassava, and maize, along with the National Agriculture Growth Scheme Agro Pocket
Kabir also highlighted government support for 500,000 farmers, covering inputs like herbicides, insecticides, and fertilizers for half-hectare plots in each state.
He urged state governors to collaborate closely with the federal government in addressing food shortages, stressing that achieving food security requires collective efforts.
