Abuja residents call on govt over indiscriminate refuse dumping

By Bisola Adeyemo

The residents of Kubwa pipeline extension in Abuja, on Saturday appealed to the Federal government to save them from mismanagement of landfill waste caused by garbage pollution.

The unlawful disposal of waste in undesignated spaces has destroyed the quality of the environment, making the environment unfit for the residents, NatureNews reports.

One of the residents, Omale Gabriel, lamented that dumping of refuse anyhow incriminates the environment by polluting the air we are inhaling which is not good for the health.

“The pits in this vicinity are so much, people come from different places to dump refuse. There is no supervision or availability of waste bins.

“Breeding of mosquitoes result in the spread of diseases like malaria and plague as well as causing obnoxious odours.

“The government should provide an official designated area with properly integrated waste management systems, which should be used for dumping, so by doing that, people will be able to dump their refuse without contaminating the vicinity.”

Another resident, Olabimpe Ibikunle said, “We need government intervention on this matter the environment is so disgusting.

“Aside from refuse dumping, some of these aboki/ Fulanis uses the pit to defecate, all these cause various diseases in humans such as dysentery, cholera, diarrhoea.

Also, while speaking with NatureNews on Saturday morning, Kenneth Okon appealed to the association leaders of the area to caution defaulters.

Efforts to speak with the association leaders of Kubwa Pipeline extension during the weekend proved abortive.
