Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, has warned the residents of the state to prepare for imminent heavy downpours and potential flooding during the 2025 rainy season.
The commissioner issued the warning at the Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) press briefing in Alausa, where he preficted that the season will extend from late March to early December.
Wahab disclosed that the average annual rainfall is expected to reach 1,936mm, significantly surpassing long-term averages.
The forecast, based on the El Niño Southern Oscillation, indicates that Lagos and neighboring Ogun State will experience heightened downpours, with areas like Ikeja, Badagry, and Lagos Island particularly vulnerable.
Residents are urged to prepare for potential flash floods, especially in low-lying regions, and strong winds at the start and end of the rainy season, which could disrupt businesses and pose risks to lives and property.
The Lagos State government assures that flood control measures are being implemented, and they are working closely with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) for early warnings.
