Alkaline steam baths lower blood pressure – Experts

Steam baths using naturally alkaline water have been found to significantly promote wellness and reduce high blood pressure, according to health experts and recent research.
Experts say that the therapeutic use of natural alkaline water in steam baths aids in detoxification, improves cardiovascular health, and contributes to overall well-being.
The Head of Medicals at OGC Foods and Beverages, Dr. Genevieve Kalu, explained that when used for steam baths and therapy, alkaline water enriched with natural minerals nourishes the skin, enhances blood circulation, and lowers stress.
She said minerals such as calcium and bicarbonates are absorbed through the skin during the steam process, causing vasodilation— the widening of blood vessels— which helps lower blood pressure and reduce stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.
She added that just 5 to 10 minutes in the steam bath initiates detoxification, releases endorphins, and induces a sense of calm and energy.
Supporting these claims, a 2021 study published in the Journal of Advances in Integrative Medicine found that steam baths could reduce heart rate and both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in healthy individuals.
The study, titled Effect of the Steam Bath on Resting Cardiovascular Parameters in Healthy Volunteers, involved subjects who underwent weekly 10 to 15-minute steam bath sessions over a 12-week period.
To harness these benefits, OGC Foods and Beverages, producers of Lasena Water, established the Lasena Artesian Natural Steam Bath and Spa.
The facility uses alkaline water directly from a naturally hot aquifer discovered in 2009, with the water reaching temperatures of up to 70 degrees Celsius.
According to Steam Bath Coordinator Gbemisola Falade, this spring water contains 13 essential minerals—including sulphates, nitrates, potassium, calcium, silica, and zinc—all in safe and beneficial concentrations.
Falade highlighted that the water is free of chlorine, preservatives, and additives, making it suitable for direct consumption and external therapy.
She noted that inhalation of the steam supports respiratory function, while mineral absorption through the skin enhances muscle recovery, reduces tension, and supports immunity.
The coordinator emphasized that individuals with hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, stroke, or partial paralysis have shown notable improvements through regular steam bath use.
She also mentioned that the therapeutic benefits are more immediate when minerals are absorbed through steam than when consumed, due to faster bodily absorption.
Experts agree that maintaining an internal pH level around 7.4 is essential for organ function and immunity, making alkaline water therapy a promising complementary treatment for many health conditions.
