Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, has reiterated the commitment of the federal government to ensure that prospective investors seeking mining licenses prioritize plans for local value addition.
This measure aims to bolster Nigeria’s economy by fostering domestic processing and refining of minerals.
During an oversight visit to the ministry by members of the House Committee on Solid Minerals recently, Alake commended the lawmakers for their collaborative efforts in revitalizing the mining sector.
He emphasized the pivotal role of synergy between the legislative and executive arms in reshaping Nigeria’s economic landscape.
Alake underscored the significance of sub-national entities in the mining sector, highlighting the role of state governments in nominating committee members and chairs of the Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO).
“The paradigm of Nigeria’s economic fortunes must shift away from sole dependence on oil. Our collaboration with the legislature is crucial in this regard,” stated Alake.
He expressed confidence in the committee’s understanding of the ministry’s challenges and its capability to provide essential support.
Highlighting the global interest in Nigeria’s mineral resources, Alake credited the ministry’s seven-point agenda for projecting the industry internationally.

“Modern security relies heavily on technology. Our new security force, complemented by drones and advanced surveillance, will ensure comprehensive protection of our mining sites and combat illicit activities,” affirmed Alake.
In his remarks, Hon. Gaza Gbefwi, Chairman of the House Committee on Solid Minerals, reiterated the committee’s commitment to overseeing the effective implementation of mining policies.
He pledged legislative support to facilitate reforms aimed at positioning the mining industry as a key driver of Nigeria’s economic prosperity.
The visit underscored the shared commitment of the executive and legislative branches to foster sustainable growth and maximize the benefits derived from Nigeria’s mineral wealth.
