Al-Hikmah University Launches Green Campus Initiative to Combat Climate Change

By Dauda Abbas

In a resounding call to address pressing environmental concerns, Professor Noah Yusuf, the Vice Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, underscored the urgent need to tackle climate change, deforestation, and the depletion of natural resources.

Speaking on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, during the launch of the Green Campus Initiative at the university’s Igbaja Campus, alongside the foundation-stone laying ceremony of the AbdulRaheem Oladimeji-FRIN Outpost, Prof. Yusuf emphasized that “the future of our planet depends on the action we take today.”

Through the initiation of this tree-planting program, Al-Hikmah University has made a steadfast commitment to combat climate change and ensure a healthier ecosystem for present and future generations.

Prof. Yusuf stated, “Al-Hikmah University has always been at the forefront of academic excellence, and it is only fitting that we take the lead in environmental conservation as well.”

He went on to highlight the multifaceted importance of trees, saying, “Trees are more than just a source of oxygen; they are the guardians of biodiversity, combatants against soil erosion, and providers of habitat for countless species.”

With the planting of these trees, the university is sowing the seeds of hope, resilience, and sustainability. In a parallel to how students are nurtured to become responsible citizens and leaders, these trees will thrive and flourish, contributing to the health and vitality of the environment.

Prof. Yusuf envisioned the Igbaja Campus as a “lush oasis of greenery” that harmoniously combines knowledge and nature.

The Vice Chancellor announced that the university management has resolved to make tree-planting a continuous practice during official events, including visitations, inaugural lectures, conferences, Matriculation, and Convocations.

Additionally, Professor Zakariya Yaduma, the Director-General of Forestry Research at the Shows Institute of Nigeria (FRIN), lauded the tree-planting initiative as a significant step towards environmental conservation outreach within the university community.

He stressed that it would complement national and global conservation efforts aimed at preserving endangered tree species. Trees within the initiative will be allowed to grow naturally, facilitating scientific observation and ensuring environmental sustainability.

Prof. Yaduma urged the university management to continue working together “to ensure that we use our nature in such a way that it will not affect its availability for future generations,” highlighting the vital role of conservation efforts.

Alhaji AbdulRaheem Oladimeji, the founder and Board of Trustees Chairman of Al-Hikmah University, known as the Jagunmolu of Igbominaland, expressed gratitude to FRIN and all those who facilitated the initiative for their commendable work.

The launch of the Green Campus Initiative stands as a testament to Al-Hikmah University’s unwavering commitment to both academic excellence and environmental stewardship, paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future.
