Akko Community in Gombe State Grapples with Severe Water Scarcity

By Grace Samuel

The Akko local government area of Gombe State, comprising towns such as Akko, Wuro Bogga, Garin Baraya, Malam Jamo, Gamadadi, Konkeje, Tongo, Lawanti, Jalingo, Dunomari, Boggage, and Marori, finds itself in the grips of a pressing issue – acute water scarcity.

According to Idris Abubakar, a resident of Malam Jamo village, the affected region, home to approximately 20,000 individuals, is facing a dire situation.

The scarcity has compelled residents to undertake arduous treks spanning three to four kilometers outside their vicinity in search of water, a journey fraught with challenges, particularly exacerbated by scorching temperatures and the observance of Ramadan.

During this holy month, the necessity for water intensifies, especially for replenishment after fasting.

However, the logistical constraints of distant water sources pose a formidable obstacle, leaving residents with no recourse but to embark on exhausting journeys either before dawn following Suhur or after dusk subsequent to Iftar.

In light of these circumstances, the community implores urgent intervention from the government to alleviate their plight by facilitating the provision of adequate water resources.

Malam Habu Abubakar, hailing from Lawanti village in Akko ward, voices a poignant appeal directed at the state government, political leaders, and philanthropists, urging them to intervene swiftly.

He said, “We plead with those concerned, for the sake of God, to extend their assistance to the people of Lawanti who are in dire need of support.”

The situation in Akko highlights a pressing humanitarian crisis, underscoring the imperative for collaborative efforts to address water scarcity and ensure the well-being of the populace.
