By Fatima Saka

The daughter of the former President of Nigeria, Hajiha Aisha Babangida had said women are predominant in agriculture as the majority of women are farmers, as she solicited for renaming of National Center for Women Development.

The former President daughter made this statement on Tuesday in Abuja, as she appeared before the Senate committee on women affairs in public hearing on the “National Center for Women Development Act CAP N15 , LFN 2004 , ( Amendment ) Bill , 2022 to Enhance the functions of the Centre and Rename the Centre after Her Excellency late Dr . Maryam Babangida and for related matters ( SB.1042 )”.

Speaking on, Aisha said initially the centre was built for Women, and the centre is at the Forefront in supporting women, not only training the women but also on how to go far. Adding that if the centre is renamed after Her late Dr . Maryam Babangida that it will help them set up with loans or grants, set up a cassava processing, as well as helping the women to assess the market.

The former President’s daughter reiterated that this will create a great impact for the woman, adding that the centre also has a lot of functions that are supposed to take care of creating bank data.

“To find out where they are, what they are doing and how they can be enhanced and bring out resources to make sure that even the leaders of these women can be educated as well.

“So enhancing the centre is very important for the development purpose, not just for the women, but for the nation. It will also enhance the capacity of a woman and will add value to the development of the country.

Also, Senator Mohammed Sani Musa representing the Niger East Senatorial District of Niger State, known as “he for she” said he feels that Her late Dr. Maryam Babangida deserved the legacy because she championed.

Sen. Musa said that this is a woman that has championed all other women, including those that are in rural areas. Adding that:

“It was an individual initiative, funds from different people, not only government agencies, but private sectors, inclusive contributed and built the centre that was named after her, while she was alive, while her husband was the president then.

“But with the coming of another administration, they changed the name to International Center for Human Development,” he added.
