AI Innovation Grand Challenge Launched at COP28 for Climate Action

By Farida Salifu

In a groundbreaking move at COP28 in Dubai, an innovative initiative has been revealed to harness the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in driving climate action, particularly in developing countries.
The AI Innovation Grand Challenge, led by the UN Climate Change Technology Executive Committee (TEC) in collaboration with Enterprise Neurosystem, aims to identify and support AI-powered solutions that will facilitate comprehensive climate actions in regions most affected by climate change.
This initiative, unveiled during a high-level event organized by the UN Climate Change Technology Mechanism in collaboration with the COP28 Presidency, has gained support from global leaders. Influential figures have underscored the transformative role that AI can play in addressing climate-related challenges.
Simon Stiell, the UN Climate Change Executive Secretary, highlighted the potential of AI as a vital instrument in combating climate change while acknowledging the associated challenges and risks. He expressed optimism about the Innovation Grand Challenge, illustrating its potential to unleash the power of AI and empower innovators in developing countries.
Omar Sultan Al Olama, the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications in the United Arab Emirates, emphasized the integration of AI into national policies and plans to mitigate climate change. Commitment to leveraging data analytics for real-time climate data and technological advancements in the energy sector was recognized as a crucial step in the global climate action agenda.
Representatives from Barbados and Senegal emphasized collaboration, training, and technology transfer in leveraging AI for climate mitigation and adaptation. They stressed the need to address the existing digital divide and tailor technological solutions to local contexts.
The grand challenge is a pivotal element of the overarching #AI4ClimateAction Initiative, aligning with the UN Secretary-General’s call to develop reliable and safe AI for climate action, contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. The initiative aspires to drive climate-resilient and low-emissions development, with a primary focus on least developed countries and small island developing states.
Chairs of the Technology Mechanism have emphasized the need for new collaborations and partnerships to translate the #AI4ClimateAction Initiative into tangible policy and implementation outcomes. This initiative marks a significant leap forward in leveraging cutting-edge technology to address critical climate challenges on a global scale.
