Agriculture key to Greece’s social stability, crisis prevention

By Faridat Salifu

Agriculture is emerging as a central mechanism for maintaining social stability and protecting communities during crises in Greece.

Beyond its economic role, farming supports resilience by ensuring access to essential food and reducing dependence on foreign imports.

History shows that nations lacking food self-sufficiency often experience social unrest and economic disruption during crises.

Recent global events, from the Ukraine conflict to the Covid-19 pandemic, have underscored the vulnerabilities of relying on external food and agricultural inputs.

Rising food prices and shortages can quickly trigger unrest, as demonstrated by previous international crises.

Experts argue that Greece must adopt a strategic approach to agriculture that prioritises sustainable production, rural livelihoods, and community preparedness.

Key recommendations include building strategic reserves of staple foods and animal feed, promoting efficient protein production through poultry and small ruminants, and developing resilient infrastructure such as silos and irrigation networks.

The integration of precision agriculture, drones, and biosurveillance can further protect crops and livestock from disease and sabotage.

Borderland farmers, particularly in areas like Evros and the Dodecanese islands, play a dual role in producing food and supporting regional security. Investing in their communities strengthens both economic and social resilience.

Training farmers in crisis response and simulating agricultural emergency scenarios can turn rural areas into a safety net for the nation.

Experts say a dedicated national fund for agricultural resilience would ensure long-term sustainability and safeguard communities from shocks.

By treating agriculture as a foundation for social cohesion and crisis prevention, Greece can protect its people, preserve livelihoods, and reduce the risk of unrest.
