Agric. project to develop new technology for poultry farmers by 2021

The Lagos Agro-Processing, Productivity, Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support (APPEALS) Project, says it is working on a new technology to support farmers in the state on poultry value chain.

Mrs Oluranti Sagoe-Oviebo, the Coordinator of the project, said that this followed the high cost of feeds after the ban on maize importation in the country.

Sagoe-Oviebo spoke with journalists on Thursday in Lagos, at the end of a week-long joint monitoring exercise to APPEALS projects implementation sites in some parts of the state.

She said APPEALS had carried out needs assessment and is now developing the new technology for the value chain.

According to Sagoe-Oviebo , the technology will be ready for use in 2021

She says that the World Bank assisted project will collaborate with research institutes on the new technology.

“We hope to do some demonstrations in 2021. It is a process; you do capacity building. We are collaborating with research institutes; we work with many different bodies,’’ Sagoe-Oviebo said.

The Nigeria Poultry Association has expressed concern over high cost of poultry feed following the Federal Government’s ban on forex for maize importation in the country.

The association says farmers spend over 70 per cent of their budget on feed, adding that this has become a huge challenge to them.

On September 16, the APPEALS project began the joint monitoring exercise to projects implementation sites on rice, poultry and aquaculture in Badagry, Ojo, Alimosho, Ikorodu and Epe areas of the state.
