ACReSAL project’s NGO plants 1.5m trees to tackle climate in Jigawa

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Partnership for Development Action (PADAC) Foundation a key NGO under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project, has planted 1.5 million trees across Jigawa State as part of efforts to tackle climate change and land degradation.

Speaking during a tree-planting campaign in Ringim Local Government Area, PADAC’s Communication Officer, Abdullahi Mukhtar, said the initiative is aimed at restoring degraded lands, protecting the ecosystem, and improving the livelihoods of vulnerable communities.

The tree planting exercise was concentrated in the communities of Dabi, Shafar, and Furji in Ringim and Yankwashi Local Government Areas—areas significantly impacted by flooding and desertification.

Each of the communities received 500 trees, consisting of both economic and non-economic species.

Mukhtar also announced that the organization has launched a wider campaign to plant 100,000 additional trees across the state under the theme “Restore the Land, Unlock the Opportunities.”

A beneficiary of the economic trees, Malama Harira from Dabi village, expressed hope that the initiative would help her regain economic stability lost due to recent flooding.

She and other community members pledged to make effective use of the opportunity to achieve long-term environmental and economic benefits.
