ACReSAL Project Enters New Phase with World Bank Support

In a collaborative effort, the Federal Government and the World Bank have initiated a joint mission to support the implementation of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project.

Dr. Joy I. Agene, Task Team Leader for the ACReSAL Project, emphasized that the mission aims to evaluate overall project progress and foster policy discussions across relevant sectors.

She outlined specific goals, including organizing a plenary session and engaging policymakers at both federal and state levels, conducting a rapid assessment of on-ground project implementation, and providing strategic guidance for larger-scale initiatives.

Additionally, Dr. Agene highlighted the mission’s focus on collaboration with State Project Management Units, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and community members to enhance Catchment Management Plans (CMP) and peace-building strategies.

Mr. Abdulhamid Umar, the National Project Coordinator for ACReSAL, shared that the mission aims to connect with key partners such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) to support landscape restoration efforts.

He emphasized the mission’s role in enhancing monitoring and evaluation systems, assessing fiduciary, environmental, and social aspects, and establishing performance metrics for each state.

Mr. Umar also highlighted engagements with the Gender and Innovation Lab (GIL) to ensure alignment and the development of impact evaluation plans for the Community Revolving Fund (CRF) and digital agricultural extension studies.

This two-week program, running from November 27 to December 13, 2023, kicked off with an Engineering Clinic in Abuja, coordinated by Engr. Chinedu Umolu, co-TTL ACReSAL.

The program includes in-person meetings in Abuja and field visits to Borno, Adamawa, Ibadan, and Niger States.

Simultaneously, a team led by the Task Team Leader and the National Project Coordinator is engaging with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Ibadan.
