ACReSAL intervention restores farmland, improves access in Kogi communities

The Olubojo–Enokpoli–Ogaji road in Ankpa Local Government Area of Kogi State is nearing completion following a rehabilitation project carried out by the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL).

The project, executed by ACReSAL, is aimed at rehabilitating the long-neglected road and addressing severe erosion that had led to land degradation and destruction of adjoining farmlands in Olubojo, Enokpoli and Ogaji communities.

For several years, the road remained in a deplorable condition, with deep gullies cutting across the route and extending into nearby farms.

The situation worsened during the rainy season, making movement difficult and limiting farmers’ access to markets in town.

Many farmers recorded losses as erosion washed away portions of their cultivated land and hindered the transportation of produce.

The intervention involved the construction of proper drainage systems, erosion control structures, and comprehensive road rehabilitation designed to stabilize the environment and protect surrounding agricultural land.

The project, which is now at the verge of completion, has significantly curbed further land degradation and restored most of the affected farmlands.

Speaking on the development, a community leader, Mr. Samuel Haruna, said the intervention has brought relief to residents.

“This road was a serious challenge for our people.

Erosion was gradually destroying our farms and making transportation very difficult.

Now, most of the damaged lands have been restored and movement has improved,” he said.

Also speaking, a farmer, Mr. Ibrahim Abdullahi, commended the project, noting that the drainage systems have helped protect their farms.

“We were losing our farms to erosion, but with this project, our lands are safer and we can now access the town easily to sell our produce,” Abdullahi stated.

Residents expressed optimism that the completion of the Olubojo–Enokpoli–Ogaji road will boost economic activities, improve agricultural productivity and promote sustainable development in Ankpa Local Government Area.
