Abuja: Wike Initiates Plastic Recycling Plant in Collaboration with UNIDO, AEPB

Mr. Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Minister, has announced plans to establish a plastic recycling plant in Abuja.
This initiative, signed recently, stems from a robust collaboration between the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), solidifying their commitment to developing a sustainable plastic value chain through circular economy techniques.
Mr. Olubunmi Olusanya, Director of Pollution Control and Environmental Health at the Federal Ministry of Environment, emphasized the global significance of plastic waste collection and its profound impact on health and the environment. He highlighted the growing importance of the plastic economy and the circular economy concept, which focuses on eliminating waste and maximizing the value of resources by extending the usage of materials.
The joint initiative aims to combat plastic pollution and mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change. Dr. Fred Kpakol, Senior Special Assistant on Environment to Minister Nyesom Wike, expressed the administration’s unwavering commitment to supporting the plastic waste project, emphasizing the importance of ensuring a sustainable environment.
Mr. Benjamin Enwerem, Director of Solid Waste Management North at AEPB, revealed Jabi as the chosen site for the plastic recycling project. He outlined the area’s diverse settlements, encompassing business institutions, organized settlements, villages, commercial centers, schools, and offices. Enwerem detailed the project’s objectives, targeting both formal and informal settlements around Jabi for comprehensive plastic recycling.
Kpakol underscored the urgency of addressing plastic waste issues in Abuja and Nigeria, emphasizing the need for advocacy and increased awareness for responsible plastic use and disposal.
Ms. Nahomi Nishio, Project Manager at UNIDO, stressed the essential role of private sector cooperation in effective plastic waste management. She highlighted that the seminar’s purpose was to raise awareness about plastic recycling and reuse.
The collaborative efforts of UNIDO, AEPB, and the FCTA Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike, signify a significant stride toward sustainable environmental practices and the circular economy. This initiative reflects a crucial approach to addressing urgent concerns related to climate change.
