Abuja Launches Nigeria’s First Solar-powered Farmer’s Market

By Faridat Salifu

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has inaugurated the Utako Farmer’s Market in Abuja, marking Nigeria’s first evergreen solar-powered market.

Built on 3,000 square meters, the facility features 50 lock-up shops, 40 informal stalls, and seven warehouses, aimed at enhancing commercial infrastructure in the region.

At the unveiling, which took place last Friday, Wike, represented by Minister of State for FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, said the project signifies a pivotal step towards boosting economic growth and providing new opportunities for residents.

He noted that the market not only supports local farmers and small-scale agribusinesses but also connects producers directly with consumers, eliminating middlemen and reducing post-harvest losses.

“This initiative reflects our shared vision for a sustainable, inclusive economy that ensures quality produce is readily accessible to every resident,” Wike stated.

He underscored that the market will serve as an economic empowerment hub and a center of agricultural excellence.

The CEO of Abuja Investments Company Limited (AICL), Ambassador Tamuno, in her remarks, pointed out that the market aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 11, promoting sustainable urban growth while enhancing living standards.

“Despite the significant investment in renewable energy, this project showcases our dedication to combining sustainability with modern practices, benefiting farmers and traders alike,” Tamuno said.

She added that the market will support the government’s food security initiatives by ensuring efficient access to fresh produce for consumers.
