FG kicks off ‘Grow-What-You-Eat’ project to empower students through agriculture

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Federal Government has launched the ‘Grow-What-You-Eat’ initiative in 20 senior secondary schools across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones and the Federal Capital Territory, aiming to equip students with practical agricultural and entrepreneurial skills.

The project was inaugurated on Thursday at Government Girls Secondary School, Dutse, Abuja, where the Executive Secretary of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), Iyela Ajayi, presented a N300,000 seed grant to kickstart the school’s farming activities.

Ajayi described the program as a bold step to transform senior secondary education by making school farming a core practical subject.

“This initiative is about more than farming — it is about growing futures by instilling discipline, responsibility, and entrepreneurship in our youth,” he said.

The government hopes the initiative will bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world practice, turning school farms into centers for learning, community service, and food security.

Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, represented by Deputy Director Kehinde Osinaike, emphasized that the initiative encourages self-reliance and innovation among students.

“Agriculture is not a punishment but a pathway to prosperity,” she said.

With training for state officers, seed funding, and monitoring frameworks in place, the government plans to scale the program nationwide.

NSSEC officials highlighted that the program is student-centered and community-driven, designed to address food security, youth unemployment, and environmental challenges.

The ‘Grow What You Eat’ initiative signals a new era for Nigerian schools, where farming becomes a practical tool to prepare students for life beyond the classroom.
