Kano inaugurates drainage project to tackle flooding

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Kano State Government has inaugurated a storm water drainage project in Ladanai Quarters of Nasarawa Local Government Area to address persistent flooding affecting residents.

The project, commissioned on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dahiru Muhammad-Hashim, is part of broader efforts by Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf to improve living conditions and reduce the impact of seasonal rains.

According to the commissioner, similar drainage interventions have been carried out in other parts of the area, including Hotoro Arewa, while the government continues to incorporate drainage systems into road construction and rehabilitation projects as part of a wider urban flood management plan.

He expressed optimism that the initiative would significantly curb flooding and ensure a safer rainy season for residents.

However, he urged the community to protect the infrastructure by avoiding practices such as dumping refuse in the drains or allowing heavy vehicles to damage them, and to report faults promptly.

Local officials and residents welcomed the
development. The chairman of Nasarawa Local Government, Yusuf Ogan-Boye, represented by councillor Ibrahim Muhammad-Musa, said previous flooding had disrupted children’s access to school.

A community representative, Jamilu Kabiru, praised the government’s intervention and called for the relocation of nearby companies to prevent damage to the new drainage system.
